Constitution Square State Historic Site

Constitution Square State Historic Site

The top attraction in the city of Danville is Constitution Square. It was here in the center of the Danville that ten constitutional conventions were held in the late 1700s, leading to Kentucky's statehood. Before it became a state the entire area, now comprising 120 counties, was Kentucky county in the far western frontier of Virginia. In 1792 Kentucky became the 15th state of the Union. Isaac Shelby, a Revolutionary War hero and convention delegate, was named the first governor of the new Commonwealth.

The square consists of several historic buildings, both replicas and original structures which depict life in the late 1700's and early 1800's. I will show several of them in the following tips.

There are also picnic tables, historical markers and public restrooms on the well landscaped park grounds which cover a square block. There is no admission charge for self guided tours. The site is open year round.

The Student

I tried learning how to play chess a while back. I didn't seem to have the patience/attention span needed for this highly complicated game. I am, however, still very much fascinated by it and by the guys who come to Union Square (and Washington Sq.) to play every single day.
